Massage parlor ordinances from two weeks prior are challenged by a professional massage therapist.

Maureen Bray brings up massage parlor issue (according a pre-meeting interview with the mayor, it has been proven that there have been illegal activities occurring at massage parlors around Torrance) and lists her expertise as a professional massage therapist, working in the business for over 30 years, protests the new ordinances restricting zoning laws and operating hours of the many new massage parlors springing up around Torrance, stating that the City of Torrance needs to be clear on ordinance, specifying terms that she feels to be upsetting. She goes on to say that not all massage parlors are participating in illegal activity and thus should be exempt from any such laws. After stating her complaint, two council members led her outside to discuss the issue personally.

Impromptu picture livens the meeting up

After being awarded with flowers, a certificate, and other honors, Hans Stierle poses for an impromptu picture with more than half the people attending the city council to commemorate and display the many people involved or affected by AYSO. This group included his wife, the first soccer mother of AYSO, several of the youth, parents who played in AYSO while they were growing up, and many, many more. After several pictures, the crowd disperses, laughing, talking, and congratulation Stierle, showing that the community he had successfully created 40 years ago is a continuing success.

Dedication ceremony for Stierle announced

Community and staff of Torrance invited to attend plaque dedication to Hans Stierle tomorrow evening, Sept 16 at Jefferson Middle School, hosted by the City of Torrance and the Del Amo Rotary Club. This will be a formal ceremony for all who wish to give their thanks to Stierle. It is expected to be a fairly big event, as AYSO originated from Torrance and has been an ongoing ordeal since the 1960s. Stierle thanks the Mayor and the City of Torrance for this honor and says he never imagined his organization to touch so many lives, but that he is glad that he has provided a way for everyone to show their love of soccer in such a great community.

Veteran AYSO soccer player shares his story

One of the first players of AYSO speaks and tells his story about how he was having problems coping with his parent’s divorce and how AYSO really helped him to deal with it. He wasn’t a very good soccer player and never thought about trying to be part of any team until his grandmother forced him to play. He loved it and because AYSO is designed so that everyone gets playing experience, got better at it. He then went on to high school to play for South High’s team, and eventually ended up on El Camino College’s team. He said that his love for soccer would never have been discovered without AYSO.

Coach thanks Stierle for all he has done

National Coach John Olwett addresses the council, commending Hans Stierle raising 82,000 coaches who take a break from their day jobs in order to make the organization work. He expresses his happiness at seeing kids work together on teams, learning good sportsmanship and teamwork. He lists some statistics of AYSO, including that now over 600,000 youth participate yearly. Again he gives the credit to Stierle for his leadership and inspiration from the very beginning.

Hans Stierle honored for over 40 years of service to the community

Torrance native Hans Stierle, founder of American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) is honored for his outstanding contributions and dedicated service to the youth in Torrance for the past 40 years; Mayor Scotto commends his amazing organization as he himself coaches one of AYSO’s soccer teams, and he shares what he has seen happen to the kids as they learn about teamwork and having fun. He gives a brief history on how AYSO began as a small soccer team in the City of Torrance and then expanded into an organization with millions participating.

Education on emergencies

Torrance is hosting an expo on NPM to inform citizens on how to respond to emergencies including earthquakes, fires, and tsunamis. It is a free event that anyone can attend and it is recommended for families, seniors, teenagers, everyone. This is a place to be educated about how to respond to emergencies in a safe and effective way. Activities include experiencing an earthquake simulation, fire drills, and more. There will also be a blood drive for those who wish to participate. Firefighters, police officers, EMT, and others trained in emergency preparedness will be demonstrating safety procedures and will be available for asking questions.

National Preparedness Month

Mayor Scotto proclaims the month of September as National Preparedness Month in the City of Torrance. He goes on to explain the importance of being prepared for natural disasters and how being prepared can cut down on chaos, injuries, and loss of lives. He says that ever since 9/11, raising awareness has become more important than ever. He encourages the City of Torrance to take opportunities to learn about how to prepare for emergencies as well as be aware of the possible dangers that could happen around the Torrance area.

Official Coastal Cleanup Proclamation

Team Torrance of the Coastal Cleanup group is commended for cleaning two miles of our beach annually for 25 years and raises public awareness of the detrimental consequences of litter. This past year the team managed to remove over 3,000 lbs of trash. Cindy Rosel accepts the resolution from the council and as a special thank you has prepared eco-friendly gift bags for each council member. Mayor Scotto poses for a picture with the crew before giving them a round of applause. He then officially proclaims September 19, 2009 as National Coastal Cleanup Day in the City of Torrance.
